Why Stradbroke Handicap is an underrated event for betting

The Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap is a Handicap race run over 1400m at Eagle Farm racecourse. It is the richest and most prestigious race of the Brisbane Winter Carnival with $1.5M in prizemoney on offer. The Handicap conditions of the race tend to ensure a close finish and good Stradbroke Handicap betting odds are on offer for all runners. The 1400m distance means that sprinters and middle-distance horses both have a chance of winning the race.

The 2022 Stradbroke Handicap will be run on Saturday 11th May at Eagle Farm racecourse.

Stradbroke Handicap History

First, run in 1890 and upgraded to Group 1 status in 1980, the Stradbroke Handicap is the highlight of the Brisbane Winter Carnival. Track redevelopments have seen the race move around between both Doomben and Eagle Farm and the race has settled at Eagle Farm race track in recent years. The race is the final leg of the Sprint Winter Crown (with the Doomben 10000 and Kingsford Smith Cup).

Recent winners include multiple Group 1 winners TOFANE and SANTA ANA LANE while BLACK PIRANA and ROUGH HABIT are the only two horses to have gone back-to-back since the race was elevated in status.

Stradbroke Handicap Form Guide

The Stradbroke Handicap is always a great betting race with a host of winning chances. Only one favourite has won the race in the last 12 years and that was TREKKING in 2019 at a juicy $7 quote. Male horses have dominated with only two mares winning the race since 2012 and no horse has carried more than 55.5kgs to victory this millennium.

Finding the winner of the race can be difficult with runners coming from varied lead-up races. Seven of the last 30 Stradbroke Handicap winners were last start winners with a further 11 finishing in the top 4 at their previous start. No stable has dominated the race in recent times which once again adds to the intrigue of the race.

The Rough Habit Miracle

New Zealand galloper Rough Habit became part of racing folklore recording back-to-back wins in 1991 and 1992. The 1991 win was a dominant victory while his 1992 win with 58.5kgs is one of the most-watched YouTube videos in Australian racing.  The gelding came from a seemingly impossible position at the home turn to weave his way through the field to win in a tight finish, much to the cheers of the Brisbane crowd. He then would step up over 600m more to win the Doomben Cup run after the Stradbroke in those days.
